Jason Rhoades’ epic work Black Pussy Soirée Cabaret Macramé was basically a series of crazy parties held in a huge Los Angeles warehouse in 2006.  I hadn’t heard of the project by the late Californian until I picked up Black Pussy Cocktail Coffee Table Book, a fantastically colourful collection of photographs documenting the original events.

The image above is taken from the official 2007 New York Reconstruction of the space. In lieu of Rhoades’ presence, which I can only imagine was enormously powerful, the gallery hung a white suit from some rainbows.

Some more arresting work by Rhoades which he completed shortly before his death (“He lived a life of excess” I was told by the gallerist) is currently on show in London at the Hauser & Wirth Gallery. In fact the main piece on show now is another “reconstruction”: a minuture of an installation even larger than his Black Pussy, which aimed to photographically represent his father’s vegetable garden. From vegetables to vegetables I suppose.
