So, for my 4th list in 4 years, I thought I’d stick to the formula. No problem. Not having a regular radio show and therefore not having genre-based listening patterns meant that I think I was much more selective with what I listened to in 2010. It was definitely the year of the Slow Jam. No doubt about that. Artists like Hype Williams, Salem and Darkstar all demonstrated this with down-tempo tunes, while Yeasayer bridged the gap of several-dozen BPM by producing a collection of double-speed hyper-ballads of the bitter-sweet variety in Odd Blood, the album that I enjoyed the most this year (though perhaps its February release date added to this!).

My Top 10 is perhaps misrepresentative of the quality of the music I listened to this year. While it features 6 fantastic debut albums, much of this year’s great music was produced by well-established artists. I considered making a comment about how exciting (or not) this year in music was, but don’t feel such points are valid, since one will continue to uncover music written in years past, and therefore continue to form an opinion about that particular year. As such, 2010 is, was, and will be a great year for music.
