3 Kings // Subliminal Projects

Shepard Fairey’s Subliminal Projects is preparing to present an unmissable show of recent work by three of NYC’s most revered graffiti artists.

Called 3 Kings, after the title apparently given to the most respected writers, the show will feature work by Fab 5 Freddy, Futura 2000 and Lee Quinones.
While I am less familiar with ‘LEE”s art, I have been a great fan of Futura’s work since it appeared on the cover of 1990s Mo’Wax releases.
Futura’s and Fab 5 Freddy’s shows at Patti Astor’s FUN Gallery in the 80s secured a place for this sort of art, which was breaking much ground at the time, in the art world in general, and their consistency in putting new work out has meant this place has been maintained.

While perhaps being rather dwarfed by MOCA’s historic Art in the Streets show down the road which closed only a couple of weeks ago, this show is still extremely important at a time when the scene is becoming increasingly dilute and tiresome, and this feels like a good way of reminding people where this art really came from.

The show opens on the 17th, when you can catch the artists at the reception on W Sunset Blvd from 8-11pm.
