Many months in the making, Hydro-Acoustics – A Collection of Nautical-Themed Contemporary Music is released today on my label The Association for Depth Sound Recordings.

Putting together a compilation of this sort was always part of the plan. One of the reasons why I started the label, and decided to give it an especially maritime-oriented aesthetic, was with this collection in mind. But I never thought I would be able to bring together such a solid collection of nautical-themed contemporary music in a matter of months!

I began asking musician friends to compose maritime-inspired pieces of music last summer, after I composed a piece of my own on a balcony in Greece (track 8!), and this album is a compilation of those commissions alongside a couple of existing, brilliant, nautical-themed submissions.

Featuring tracks utilising numerous sources including:
– field recordings from Dutch ports;
– a synth-laden reading from the book Biology of the Seas of the U.S.S.R.;
– a string quartet on a track by hotly-tipped Clean Bandit;
– sea-shore samples over vintage electronics; and
introducing a brand new slab of (literally) deep techno by Alex Bill.

We have printed a very limited run of 200 CDs which are available for purchase for £5 from our website here.

You can listen to the full album below or on the site, where a full digital release can also be purchased for only £4. Other digital retailers are also stocking the release.

I hope you enjoy the album!
