James Blake // Retrograde / Overgrown

Old buddy JB is back from nowhere with Retrograde which requires playing in consequential crescendic iterations. Start off quiet, and carry on. A really brilliant song.

I am pleased that James has returned to the good old days of his productions where his vocals add to the stunning electronics but don’t serve as their base. I was disappointed with his album after the many stand-out solo productions that preceded it, but between then and now he has treated fans with a series of purer productions, including Order on Hemlock’s HEK011 which may be my favourite of all his songs (and for some reason doesn’t feature on his official discography), and I am glad that this interlude seems to have influenced the sound on the forthcoming album, Overgrown, out in April.

The video is great, and is yet another one directly inspired by the Biker Mice from Mars:
